Discovering New Jersey’s Naval History

The New Jersey Naval Museum (NJNM) is located along the Hackensack River in Hackensack New Jersey. The museum is created specifically for the New Jersey’s Navy. The prominent feature on its collection is the USS Ling (SS-297), a 312-foot (95m) long Balao-class submarine used during the World War II. The museum is operated by the Submarine Memorial Association.

The museum allows guided tours of the Ling. Visitors are assisted in exploring the equipment and weaponry. Interestingly, the weaponry of the Ling includes one 4” deck gun. There are also about twenty-four torpedoes for viewing. The volunteers in the museum also maintain a WWII Japanese suicide torpedo, a German two-man coastal defense submarine and a Vietnam War-era Patrol Boat, River. The museum is an interesting place to get inspiration when you are writing a dissertation regarding naval history and heritage. You will get lots of ideas and insights which will be beneficial for your study. The unique onshore museum also keeps unique items on its collections that everyone should be excited about. With the experience you had while visiting the place, you will surely be able to write a term paper regarding your trip. In January 2007, the owner of the site had informed the management of the museum and submarine that relocation is needed. And so efforts are being made to look for another site. This museum should never cease operating as it gives inspiration and education to the public.
